This patent targets sectors with hydrocarbon storage facilities that suffer degradation and contamination, which can cause serious problems when fuel is used in ships, trains, trucks, backup generators, etc.

Fuels stored for long periods may undergo polymerization, oxidation, emulsions, and bacterial and fungal contamination. These issues can form residues and gums; aging residues can severely affect engines and fuel systems.

Sectors:

• Maritime industry: yachts, ferries and cargo vessels. Ship tanks often accumulate water on board.
• Service stations (underground tanks). Moisture can build up easily.
• Fuel storage, transport and distribution companies. Microbes in storage tanks and crude cause costly biodeterioration of inventory and infrastructure.

Bacteria and fungi can grow in crude and product tanks. Biologically contaminated tanks suffer quality and infrastructure issues affecting vehicles: sludge, clogged filters and injectors, discoloration, corrosion of tanks and pipes, emulsification and water mixing, and costly fuel degradation.

• Automotive: vehicles in humid regions, especially when unused for long periods.
