We are talking about a sector that is constantly growing and currently has a total fleet of more than 28,000,000 pleasure boats and ferries around the world and around 115,000 merchant ships. In total, we find a total infrastructure of 29,150,000 ships.

At the

European

Germany, Italy and Spain are the main contributors to the European crude oil refining industry, as the three countries together account for more than 35% of the region's active refining capacity.

Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands are the key countries in Europe, accounting for more than 55.1% of total refining capacity in the region.

Germany

It has the highest active refining capacity of 2,136 thousand barrels per day (mbd) in 2017. The Rheinland refinery has the highest active refining capacity of 325 mbd.

Italy

It can be considered as the second country in Europe with the highest active refining capacity of 1,653 mbd in 2017. The Melili refinery, a cracker refinery operated by Lukoil Oil Co, has the highest active refining capacity in the country at 320 mbd.

Spain

It is the third largest country in the region in terms of active refinery capacity. The country has a total active refinery capacity of 1,542 mbd. Gibraltar-San Roque, operated by Compañía Española de Petróleos SAU, has the largest active capacity of 241 mbd.

International

According to all data consulted, most countries have between 9,000 and 20,000 service stations.

Internationally, according to information gathered by the Mexican newspaper "El Financiero", the United States is the country with the largest refining capacity in the world, followed by Japan and China. Likewise, according to the International Energy Agency, Mexico is behind countries such as Brazil, Canada and the United Kingdom.

There are around 681 refineries in the world, 21.9 per cent of which are located in the United States. China, Russia and Japan are the other three countries with the largest number of such complexes, according to the Ministry of Energy (Sener).
